Elsa (Fiona) Young was born near Pungkupirri waterhole near Tjukurla in Western Australia. She lived in Docker River and Warakurna before moving to Tjukurla with her husband Adrian Young (deceased) and their children and extended family. Elsa is a strong Ngaanyatjarra woman, with a wealth of cultural knowledge and love for her country and family. Her paintings depict the tjukurrpa of her country around Tjukurla and Warakurna through beautifully intricate explorations of line and space. Elsa’s work is sought-after by collectors and buyers alike around Australian and internationally.

This painting depicts the site known as Pungkupirri. This is a womens dreaming site located between Tjukurrla and Kintore. The women gathered at this permanent water site and prepared seed damper from ground Kampurarpara ( Bush Tomatoe). The oblique linear pattern depicts the surrounding sand dunes and also has an association with the traditional knotted hair belt worn by the women during initiation.
