Janelle Stockman Napaltjarri is the granddaughter of Billy Stockman, one of the original members of the early Papunya Tula artists.
Unlike her peers, Janelle’s works do not recount a story of her family’s dreamtime but were simply an expression of herself. Janelle had always said that she paints from within, acknowledging the freedom of her expression.
She loved mixing beautiful colours, or making a bold statement with black and white. She said that the colours of the bush and her environment were all of these colours.
Sadly in late November 2009, Janelle’s life was tragically cut short.
Out of respect to Janelle’s family and Aboriginal customs, DESERT ART CENTRE removed her name, images and artworks from our sales and website immediately. With a full year passed and permission to now show her name and photo, we have again listed some of her beautiful pieces for sale.
Janelle was destined to become one of Australias top artists.
From the moment her new designs surfaced, her work was admired by many and featured in many exhibitions.
In April 2005 Janelle had her first solo exhibition.
In May 2006 she visited Sydney for the first time for an exhibition featuring her sand hill paintings and her work has been shown throughout the USA.
The remaining artwork of Janelle’s is once again being listed by the few galleries who were lucky enough to aquire pieces prior to her death.
These will become more and more sought after as an investment, and to own something from a truly naturally gifted artist.
